Jill Schmid’s background in rhetoric and communication research guides her work with attorneys in the development of trial strategies for litigation. Dr. Schmid has extensive experience in the design and analysis of mock trial and focus group research for arbitration, mediation, bench, or jury trials. Dr. Schmid’s current practice is also dedicated to strategy work, witness preparation, jury selection, graphics, and attorney speech preparation.
Prior to joining Tsongas, Dr. Schmid held lecturer positions with Willamette University and Linfield College. While in these positions, she focused her teaching on classes in public speaking, rhetorical theory, persuasion, interpersonal, political, and intercultural communication. Dr. Schmid’s research has focused on areas of message framing, narrative, visual messages, and attitudes.
Dr. Schmid received her masters and doctorate from the University of Washington’s School of Communication. There she studied communication theories and practices, information processing with special emphasis on the role of gender and race in that processing, attitude formation and change, persuasion, media relations, and advertising/marketing.
She is also a certified mediator in general mediation as well as domestic relations mediation. Her interest in mediation stems from a motivation to uncover why and how parties resolve conflicts. Dr. Schmid is a member of the American Society of Trial Consultants (ASTC).
